Spatial Media
The term 'spatial media' describes media that rely heavily on the experience of a body situated in space to convey meaning and information. It has been used by Celia Pearce to describe everything from ancient cathedrals and cave paintings to videogames and virtual reality.
It can be put in contrast with textual (written) and temporal (music, film) media, though it often incorporates both. Sometimes, it is referred to as narrative architecture or environmental storytelling, but these are only parts of a larger framework.
I employ the term loosely to create a permeable category not bound by strict definitions. Specifically, I am interested in the experience of videogame space, amusement spaces such as theme parks and boardwalks, World's Fairs and expositions, non-places like transportation hubs and shopping malls, and urban environments.
